Ancient Byways Series
Safed or Tsfat in Israel’s Galilee is an ancient city dating back to Biblical Israel. It is a magical, spiritual haven which never fails to delight on many visits there. Visitors can learn at one of the Kabbalah centers or wander the narrow alley ways filled with art, books, candles and souvenirs. Every time I visit Safed I am enchanted once again with the spiritual feeling inherent within the Ancient Byways,, the delight of turning a corner and coming upon an unexpected vista or a bit of history which highlights the drama and continuity of living in Israel.
This painting, Ancient Byways, was created to generate the feeling, in the viewer, of turning a corner, or walking through a passage which brings you to something new and unexpected. These ancient walls hold secrets and stories of long forgotten travelers, religious pilgrims and early settlers. There is a constant stream of visitors, Jewish, Christian and others who come seeking a sense of spiritual connection and inner peace. The colors of the walls represent both the enduring strength and meaning of this place and the open air vista of blue sky provides the refreshing, uplifting connection with heaven-a rejuvenation of the human spirit.
The vistas are vast and beautiful as the City of Safed is located in the high reaches of the Upper Galilee. Looking out over the surrounding valleys, one feels somewhat suspended between the ancient and present day, between spiritual and cultural experiences and between mystery and the concrete reality of the ancient stones and walls.
