Poppies From the Garden recalls a fond memory from my days in Toronto.
When I saw a neighbor busy taking a picture of the poppies blooming on my front lawn my attention became focused on this amazing display of color power. Imagine a total stranger so captivated by the display of color that she had to stop and take a photo.
I knew I would have to paint them. These beautiful, vibrant flowers waving gently in the wind did indeed stop people in their tracks. After a cold, dreary Canadian winter with a lack of color and vitality the gorgeous scarlet red of the poppies from the garden provided a visual feast of color. The orange, golden yellow and purple were supporting actors in this intense, garden drama.
The second feature which caught my attention was the curving and overlapping of the petals. You can almost reach out and touch them, moving in a diagonal pattern on the canvas. Looking down into the bowls of these beautiful flowers, some in full face, some slightly hidden is akin to being drawn into a vortex of color.
